English Department

The English I and English II College Preparatory curriculum at the East Orange STEM Academy high school is a literature-based program with an emphasis on developing reading, writing and critical thinking skills.  Teacher instruction is systematic, with engaging lessons that empower students to develop the attitudes, strategies, and processes of independent readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

Students have opportunities to explore literature through various lenses by reading classic and contemporary novels, prose and poetry.  As they read a variety of literary works, they analyze and evaluate key assumptions, ideas, reasons, and justifications.  Students compose and assess a series of interdisciplinary writing assignments including research papers, short narratives, persuasive and expository essays.  Targeted strategies aim to:
  • develop students’ ability to find, explain and defend (through discussion and writing) key ideas in literature
  • help students to make effective use of rhetoric, establish and maintain voice, and achieve appropriate emphasis through diction and sentence structure
  • further develop students’ organization and grammar skills so they become more effective and proficient in written and spoken communication

In the English classroom, technology is used to enhance student learning. Teachers use digital media tools and software applications to create visual aids for lessons, to review and comment on student work, and encourage creativity of expression.  Students use technology to access online literature databases, to integrate video clips into presentations, for peer feedback and real-time collaborative writing.
